Higher cume without the measurement of the high usage that Prime P1's traditionally provide for minority stations is what has caused the concern. Recruitment in minority communities has always been an issue and is even more problematic when it comes to any sort of electronic measurement. Arbitron has been relatively responsive to calls to ensure the panels are more representative, and as with any new methodology, after time things are beginning to stabilize in most PPM markets. Great interview.

Rob - yes, I remember that. There's probably a curve of adoption for each category which flattens out when the universe of people in that interest group who are open to today's subscription process is saturated. Leo made the point that podcast distribution has a "flashing 12" problem (not his words, but my interpretation). His point was that the steps of a) learning about a show, b) using iTunes (or other podcast client) to "subscribe" (with implications of payment) and c) then constantly synching a device to freshen the content pose a barrier to those that are on the other side of the "flashing 12" gap. The alternative is some kind of one button push access, like in a Tivo program guide.

Interestingly Leo said two years ago that growth for TWiT on the downloads has stopped when talking at Mac World. What really has happened is that growth for those interested in Tech is what stopped over two years ago - but the growth is definitely there for non tech related topics. It is just that Leo is only looking at on segment of Podcasting and then declaring a blanket statement that in-correctly covers all of Podcasting.

Podcasting is the clunky precursor to what I still believe could be the most dramatic change in audio delivery since the transistor. OK maybe the Walkman. Think automatic wireless syncs of your favourite programs.

I am particularly fond of KUT in Austin. And, there's an independent rocker that's pretty decent (can't remember the calls, though). I know what you mean about using the iPod and podcasts, though. Even though I feel somewhat guilty about it (being in the "biz") I've been listening to podcasts for 4 years or so now in the car. But - as I am trying to point out - content is king, and if ads along with content = good listening, people will tune in to commercial radio. The challenge is creating programming that reaches out and grabs enough people to make a mass-market station financially viable.
